Create and preview your first workflow

Build two instructions, connect them, and check the sequence in Preview.

Written by Alex Merkin

Create a small practice workflow: Prepare the workspace → Review the workspace. Finish by viewing both instructions in order. You do not need fields, variables, triggers, or electronic signatures for this first exercise.

Before you start

You need permission to create and edit workflows, plus an administrator-approved Workflow Type for practice. If that type requires a Part, ask your administrator for a test Part. Use practice data rather than changing a live process.

1. Create and name the draft

  1. Open Modeling → Workflows → All workflows, then click New Workflow. The empty editor opens.

  2. Click Add First Step. The first instruction appears.

  3. Open More (⋮) → Workflow Settings. Name the workflow TRAINING — Workspace check.

  4. Select the agreed practice Workflow Type. If it requires a Part, select the agreed test Part. Close the settings to return to the editor.

2. Write the first instruction

  1. Select the first step and open Basic Info.

  2. Set Title to Prepare the workspace. Set Description to Clear the workspace and place the required materials within reach.

  3. Open Process and enable First Step for this instruction. It is the entry point; keep that setting off on the second step.

Process → First Step marks the entry point. Read-only example; enable it in your editable practice draft.

3. Add the second instruction

  1. Click Add Step in the workflow pane, then select the new step.

  2. In Basic Info, set Title to Review the workspace and Description to Confirm that the workspace is clear and the materials are ready.

4. Connect the instructions

  1. Select Prepare the workspace and open Routing.

  2. Click Add Exit Route. Under Target Step, choose Review the workspace.

  3. Leave the condition empty for this single unconditional connection. The second step needs no outgoing route.

  4. Switch to Flow and confirm an arrow goes from Prepare to Review. Moving cards only changes their layout.

Routing shows a target with an empty condition. This read-only example uses different instruction names from the exercise.

5. Save and preview

  1. Wait for Saved in the header.

  2. Open the validator badge. Resolve errors; if the error concerns the Workflow Type or Part, ask the administrator who supplied the practice setup.

  3. Click Preview and choose the start-from-root option if a menu appears. Choose the test Part if prompted.

  4. Read and complete the first instruction, then continue to the second. Confirm that the titles, text, and sequence match your draft.

Success: both instructions appear in order in Preview, and the editor shows Saved. Keep this exercise as a draft while learning. Publishing is a separate task.

If the preview cannot start

Check that the workflow is saved, the first instruction is marked First Step, and the connection has the intended target. Follow the exact validator message for any remaining setup issue.

Next: add a required data field. For an existing workflow, see organize and connect steps.
