The Step Editor: an introduction to the tab system

Understand each tab and why the available tabs change with your selection.

Written by Alex Merkin

Select a step in Tree or Flow to open its settings on the right. A regular step has nine tabs.

Read-only example. These controls are disabled in the capture; use an editable practice draft to configure them.

What each tab controls

  • Basic Info: operator title, description, media, chapter assignment, and other basic properties.

  • Enrichment: operator data fields, a Location selection, and Tools.

  • Process: production-entity selection, First Step, Optional, Milestone, and other process settings. Step Standard Time appears when the workflow uses step-level timing.

  • Signatures: electronic signing, signature requirements, certifications, sequence, same-user signing, and unsigning requirements.

  • Triggers: actions tied to step events, with optional conditions.

  • Routing: outgoing connections, targets, labels, and conditions.

  • BOM: links between this step and items in the workflow's BOM.

  • List Items: shared reference items attached to the step. These are different from the choices in a Select or Radio field.

  • Logic: conditional Show/Hide behavior for the step.

The Process tab includes Production Entity Mode, First Step, Optional, Milestone, and Operation Code.

Count badges identify configured content on applicable tabs, such as triggers or routes. They are navigation aids, not a validation result.

Chapters, references, and add-on steps

An add-on step has Basic Info, Routing, and Logic, with its add-on feature selected in Basic Info. Add-on step availability depends on the configured features in the environment.

A chapter has Basic Info. A reference step has Basic Info, Routing, and Logic; its actual instructions are maintained in the referenced workflow.

The editor keeps the current tab when it is valid for the next selection, or falls back to an available tab. Do not rely on a separate remembered tab for every step across sessions.

Selecting several steps

Ctrl-click or Cmd-click multiple steps to open the bulk editor. It offers Basic Info, Enrichment, Process, Signatures, Triggers, and Logic. Routing, BOM, and List Items are not bulk-edit tabs.

A Varies indication means the selected steps differ. Some differing properties cannot be edited together. Select one step when you need to inspect its individual configuration.

Which tab should I use?

Use Enrichment to capture a measurement, Routing to send an operator down a pass or fail path, Triggers to store a calculated result, and Logic to conditionally show a non-branching instruction. These features serve different purposes even though several use conditions.
