Before starting, ensure that the intended location and tools exist in their catalogs and that you can edit the workflow. Start with one tool and one location. Check what the operator sees; if serial reporting is required, also check that requirement in a test session.
Use Enrichment to associate a Location and Tools with a step. These selections use existing catalog records.
Tool serial tracking and operator certifications are different systems. A tool's calibration attachment does not itself give an operator a signing certification.
Read-only example. These controls are disabled in the capture; use an editable practice draft to configure them.
Choose a location
Select the step and open Enrichment.
Find Location.
Search for and select the intended location.
Clear or replace it if the step changes.
The step's Location control is a single selection. It is different from assigning production entities in Process.
Add tools
Find the Tools section, search the catalog, and select the tools the operator needs. Remove an irrelevant tool from the step when it is no longer part of the instruction.
If the required tool does not exist, create/configure it in the Tools catalog first. The step selection is not where individual serial instances are fully administered.
Informational versus serial-managed tools
A non-serial tool provides guidance about equipment to use.
A serial-managed tool has configured individual instances. The operator must select an eligible tool serial before signing the relevant step. Test with valid, active serials and the intended calibration/expiration setup.
Do not turn an informational tool into a serial-tracked requirement without preparing its actual instances.
Check the operator experience
Preview the instruction and tool information. In a real test session:
Confirm the intended tool is shown.
For a serial-managed tool, select an eligible serial.
Try completing the step without the required serial selection.
Check that the selected tool instance is recorded.
Also verify the behavior for inactive or expired serials using controlled test data.
Common mix-ups
A Location identifies where the instruction is associated. A Production Entity has its own process/asset behavior. A Tool identifies equipment used for the task. A Certification controls an eligible signer's qualification.
Choose the relevant mechanism rather than relying on similarly named records to enforce the same behavior.
