Before configuring the BOM, have existing parts and components, agreed quantities, and edit permission. A bill of materials (BOM) describes the required components. Linking an item to a step determines where it appears during work. Start with one component and verify it before linking the full list.
The workflow-level BOM lists the components available to the process. A step's BOM tab links the items relevant to that particular instruction.
These are two separate configuration tasks. Defining a workflow BOM does not automatically make every item required on every step.
Define the workflow BOM
Open More → BOM.
Use Add Parts to select the required components.
Complete the applicable quantities and other BOM settings.
Review the list for duplicates or unintended components.
Wait for the workflow changes to save.
Confirm the intended Part/revision context and component data with the process owner.
Link items to a step
Select the step that uses the components.
Open its BOM tab.
Search the workflow BOM by the available identifying information.
Link the items needed on this step.
Set Required in step deliberately for each applicable item.
If the tab says no workflow BOM is defined, configure the workflow-level list first.
A newly linked item is not automatically required. Linking and marking required are distinct actions.
The selected component is linked to this step and marked Required in step. Verify its quantity and identity against the intended BOM. This is a read-only example, not the parts list for your process.
Filters and bulk link controls
Use Show linked only to inspect the step's selection. Link/unlink-all controls operate on the filtered items, so check the filter before applying them.
Unlinking an item from a step is different from removing that component from the workflow's BOM.
Verify the operator behavior
Use an appropriate test Part and Work Order/kit context. Check that the expected items appear on the intended step and that required-item behavior matches the process.
Do not infer physical component consumption, serial selection, or ERP reporting solely from seeing an item linked in the editor. Those outcomes depend on the surrounding configuration and must be checked in a real test session.
After changing the workflow BOM, revisit affected steps and run the validator. Confirm their links and required flags still refer to the intended components.
