What this is

This guide helps you resolve the error “Serial number is in use” when trying to disconnect or remove a part in Next Plus.
It’s useful for Editors and Administrators who manage Parts, Serials, and Work Orders in the system.

The error happens when a serial number is still linked to a parent assembly, work order, or stock transaction — even if it doesn’t appear in the immediate workflow screen.

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the serial number

    • Copy the full serial number (Ctrl + C).

    • Make sure you are checking the exact format (no missing digits or spaces).

  2. Search in the “Devices” / Inventory view

    • Go to Reports > Devices (or the Stock Transactions report).

    • Paste the serial number into the search field.

    • This shows the current parent linkage and where the serial is in use.

  3. Check for parent assemblies (BOM)

    • If the serial belongs to a child part, verify whether it is still connected to a higher-level Bill of Materials (BOM).

    • Example: A fuselage (parent) still references the component, even if the sub-work order looks empty.

  4. Look across multiple work orders

    • Sometimes, the same serial may appear in a different Work Order or Next (NXT) record (e.g., NXT74 vs NXT76).

    • Use the report to identify the exact work order where it’s linked.

  5. Remove from reporting before disconnecting

    • If the serial was already reported in a session, disconnect it first from the session reporting screen.

    • Only then try removing it from stock or the BOM.

  6. Retry disconnecting

    • Go back to the workflow or stock item.

    • Click Disconnect / Remove again.

    • Save changes — the serial should now release without error.

Common Issues / FAQs

  • Why does it say “in use” when it looks empty?
Because the serial may still be tied to a higher-level parent, or to a work order that’s not visible in your current session.

  • How do I know exactly where it’s in use?
Use the Devices report or Inventory transactions. They show the full hierarchy and the active parent item.

  • I don’t have permission to delete serials. What now?
Only Admins can fully remove or reassign serials. If you’re an Operator/Editor, escalate to your system Admin.
